Nuclear Industry

Our Nuclear History

Rex Heat Treat, a pioneer in advanced heat treating, began serving critical industries in 1955 with its first vertical gantry. By 1960, the facility was modified for the Minuteman missile program, establishing a foundation for specialized expertise in high-stakes sectors like defense and nuclear.

Leveraging this capability, Rex Heat Treat became a trusted partner in the nuclear sector, with a deep understanding of the stringent quality and documentation demands. Our vertical heat treating processes are ideal for critical components, such as large piping and submarine parts, where material integrity is paramount.

Thanks to our internal program, we adhere to the requirement that nuclear products do not come into contact with detrimental materials. This is accomplished by following Level 1 nuclear procedures and various standards, including MIL, ANSI, ASM, and NIST. Specific items, such as  nuclear paint markers, fresh gloves, clean straps, and rubber covers for forklift trucks, are utilized to prevent contact with non-compliant surfaces.

The Rex Heat Treat Process

  1. 1. First, we subject the alloys to a pre-treatment process, which includes cleaning and inspecting the material to ensure it is free from cracks and deep scratches.
  2. 2. Next, we ensure that each part is properly fixtured.
  3. 3. Once the parts are fixtured, they will be placed in the vertical furnace.
  4. 4. Then, we ensure that the furnace is properly sealed before heating the alloys. The length of time the parts “soak” is dependent on their alloy.
  5. 5. After the parts are done soaking, they undergo a process called quenching, which involves a rapid cooldown.
  6. 6. Then, we temper the metal to ensure it isn’t too brittle after the quenching.
  7. 7. Every part is handled with the proper safety gear and care by our certified experts to ensure that no nuclear products come into contact with detrimental materials.
  8. 8. Finally, we inspect each part to ensure quality and send it off to the respective customers.

We Are NADCAP and ITAR Approved!

Being approved by the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP) and International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) sets us apart from other heat treatment providers. These accreditations give our customers peace of mind knowing their products will be of the highest quality possible and meet all the necessary standards set by the nuclear industry.
