Our Commercial History

Rex Heat Treat, a pioneer in advanced heat treating, began serving critical industries in 1955 with its first vertical gantry. By 1960, the facility had been modified for the Minuteman missile program, establishing a foundation for specialized expertise in high-stakes sectors such as defense and nuclear.

Over time, we expanded our operations into other industries. When John took over operations from his father, he expanded the business to include commercial heat treating due to an increased demand he saw in the industry. By the ‘80s we were starting to get recognized for our efforts in the commercial industry.

In 2000, we expanded our reach by building another location in Bedford, PA. This location in particular is central to most of our commercial industry business operations. We serve businesses across various industries, including aerospace, medical, automotive, agriculture, construction, and more.

The Rex Heat Treat Process

  1. 1. First, we subject the alloys to a pre-treatment process, which includes cleaning and inspecting the material to ensure it is free from cracks and deep scratches.
  2. 2. Next, we ensure that each part is properly fixtured.
  3. 3. Once the parts are fixtured, they will be placed in the vertical furnace.
  4. 4. Then, we ensure that the furnace is properly sealed before heating the alloys. The length of time the parts “soak” is dependent on their alloy.
  5. 5. After the parts are done soaking, they undergo a process called quenching, which involves a rapid cooldown.
  6. 6. Then, we temper the metal to ensure it isn’t too brittle after the quenching.
  7. 7. Every part is handled with the proper safety gear and care by our certified experts to ensure that no nuclear products come into contact with detrimental materials.
  8. 8. Finally, we inspect each part to ensure quality and send it off to the respective customers.
